Indexing Main Page

Judy works with authors and publishers to create back-of-book indexes for nonfiction books. There is nothing more useful to a reader of a nonfiction book than to have a comprehensive, intuitive, and elegant index.

Judy indexes books in many fields, including: biography/memoir, business/economics, education, health/fitness/diet, nonprofit management, religion/spirituality, science/technology, and social sciences. Click here to view Judy's Indexing Portfolio. She has been indexing since 2008.

A good index increases book sales. And satisfies readers. An index serves as a map to the depth and breadth of content. An index gives readers multiple access points to that content. And an index supports readers in finding and revisiting the content that they are interested in.

In creating an index, Judy

  • identifies and locates relevant information,
  • analyzes text to indicate relationships between concepts, and
  • arranges entries into a systematic and helpful order.

She retains the author’s terminology as well as anticipates the language and expectations of a variety of readers. She includes helpful cross-references and double postings to ease the readers' search.

She can create the index to author and publisher specifications. Or you can ask her to make the decisions about those items. She creates stand-alone indexes as well as embedded indexes.

Judy completed the University of California Berkeley indexing course with high acclaim, under the instruction of Jan Wright, Wright Information Indexing Systems. She is a member of the American Society for Indexing (ASI).
